BACK IN SF
Though I'm happy to be back home, I do miss everyone speaking to me in Dutch.
There was just nothing I could do to convince people in Holland that I don't speak Dutch. People at my hotel, folks at the event venue I was working, and even the lady in the NEW ENGLISH BOOKS store where I bought my International Herald Tribune every morning all spoke to me in Dutch.
I took it as a compliment.

My step-dad, whose parents were born in Norway, had the same problem when we visited there when I was a kid. I remember one lady on the bus thinking he was teasing her. She got angry and kept shouting at him in Norwegian. This is why the only phrase in that language I still remember is "I don't speak Norwegian."
Ach we kunnen wel door blijven brabbelen int nederlands, :-P
